We are currently recruiting for a Full Time IMCA at our Essex All Age Advocacy Service.

Rethink Mental Illness advocacy services support people to make informed decisions, to know their rights and to access the services they are entitled to. Whether in the community, hospital or secure units, we believe in the principles of independence, empowerment, impartiality, confidentiality and inclusion, and we provide our services for free for all those that need us.

Independent Mental Capacity Advocates provide advocacy to support and represent people without capacity in line with the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, its Code of Practice and the Code of Practice for the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

The ideal candidate will be experienced in Advocacy and the role and will be able to provide support to people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (patients) OR support people defined under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, ensuring that they understand the Act and their own rights and safeguards.

The post holder will be responsible for:

Ensuring that the patient has been accorded their rights, and that they understand and can exercise those rights, and that they understand the rights of others in relation to their detention.

Ensuring that the patient has their voice heard by supporting them to articulate their views and to engage with relevant professionals.

Supporting the patient to access information, and to understand better what is happening, what is planned, and the options available to them.

Supporting the patient to explore options, make better informed decisions and to engage with the development of their care plans; and supporting the patient to counteract any actual or potential discrimination.

The post holder will possess:

Independent Advocacy Qualification including; IMCA and Independent Advocacy units (3.06).

Experience of providing advocacy to people with severe mental illness, learning disability, dementia or similar in a hospital, care or community setting.

Candidates without the above qualifications will need to have previous legal, health or social care experience or background as well as experience of health or social care related activities e.g. Best Interest meetings.

Access to own vehicle as regular travel across Essex will be required.
